Education & Leadership Development

The Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy develops and supports an array of educational opportunities. From the Miller School of Medicine's Ethics and Humanities Pathway and Bioethics Journal Club to the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Philosophy Summer Internship Program, the Institute has emerged as a "universal donor" to UM curricula and special projects.

The IBHP has launched a new Spanish-language course, “Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine,” in collaboration with the University of the Andes in Bogotá, Colombia.

Since 1992, the Dialogues in Research Ethics series has offered a forum for faculty, students, and the community to discuss and debate ethical issues in research.


Since 2000, the Institute has hosted Ethics Grand Rounds with leading bioethics scholars. These lunchtime lectures on the medical campus are free and open to the public.


Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) education is required for UM affiliates who are involved in research and supported by NIH or NSF funds.

The Society promotes special projects, scholarly discussion, and community service, while exploring the ethical implications of academic, professional, and social life.

Schwartz Rounds are guided conversations where healthcare staff reflect on the emotional and social aspects of patient care. They aim to support caregiver well-being and foster a compassionate clinical environment.
