The Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy coordinates UM instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). 

RCR education is required for UM affiliates who are involved in research and supported by NIH or NSF funds. It is also required by some UM colleges/schools and departments for all affiliates who may be involved in research, regardless of their funding source(s).

  • Human Subjects

    Each year, Dr. Sergio Litewka, International director of the IBHP, teaches U.S. regulatory framework for research with human subjects required for anyone involved in human subjects research. This programs covers the ethical principles and regulatory requirements, such as the Common Rule, and include training on roles and responsibilities, informed consent, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures.

  • Research Ethics Training in Latin America

    Sergio Litewka, M.D., coordinates RCR activities under the Fogarty-funded (Project Number 5R25TW012716-02) Research Ethics Training in Latin America (RETAMA) program, based at the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia.
