Annual Bioethics Conference

“Florida Ethics: Debates, Decisions, Solutions” Conference

This conference began in 1993 as a modest workshop and has evolved into what has been described as one of the largest community bioethics conferences in the country, regularly attracting as many as 400 attendees. As its name makes clear, the program aims both to provide a forum for the discussion and debate of issues in bioethics and to contribute to ethical solutions for problems and challenges in clinical practice, research and public policy.

Three giants of contemporary bioethics- Bernard Gert, Tom Beauchamp, and Al Jonsen- discuss similarities and differences among their approaches at the 1994 (2nd Annual) conference.  It was apparently the only time all three were on such panel.

The conference is simultaneously the Spring Conference of the statewide Florida Bioethics Network. The program is regularly approved for CMEs/CEUs/CLEs for professionals in medicine, nursing, law, pastoral care, social work, and others.

Over the years, the conference has featured many of the leading scholars, administrators and clinicians in bioethics and related fields, including Tom Beauchamp, Baruch Brody, Dan Clouser, Chuck Culver, Kathleen Foley, Bernard Gert, Al Jonsen, Alan Meisel, Steve Miles, Haavi Morreim, Bill Nelson, Hilde Nelson, Jim Nelson, Ed Pellegrino, Donna Shalala, and Michael Slote.
