Director of Nursing Ethics, Institute for Bioethics; Associate Chief Nursing Officer for Advanced Practice Providers, UHealth System

Dr. Houghton is Director of Nursing Ethics for the Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy and Associate Chief Nursing Officer for Advanced Practice Providers for the UHealth system, where he has leadership of more than 600 nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurse anesthetists. He was a member of the Jackson Health System Ethics Service for close to 20 years prior to joining UHealth in 2023.

Dr. Houghton is a national leader in advancing the role of the nurse practitioner. He was the first nurse practitioner in an adult ICU at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he worked in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit for over 20 years.

Dr. Houghton holds national certification in acute care (ACNPC), in critical care nursing (CCRN) and as a Nurse Executive, Advanced (NEA-BC). He was inducted as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2011 for local, national, and international contributions to the nurse practitioner profession. He has given more than 100 podium presentations at national and international conferences, many pertaining to applied ethics in critical care. He has numerous publications, including six book chapters on Ethics and end-of-life care in the critical care setting.
